This is the third of five webinars in the 'Korea-Vietnam before the 20th Century Series' scheduled for Fall 2022. The series brings together scholars interested in Korean-Vietnamese in dialogue in order to develop a framework for meaningful future collaboration.

This webinar will examine Vietnam and Korea through both a "connected" perspective and and comparative lens. A "connected" perspective emphasizes linkages and circulations, namely the flow of ideas, texts, people and objects. A comparative lens hones in on issues of historical process and the convergence or divergence of particular institutions, cultural patterns, or social configurations.

Professor MOMOKI Shiro is a Professor Emeritus of Osaka University, Japan (currently teaching at Vietnam-Japan University in Hanoi). He has been studying medieval and early modern Vietnamese history and its position in Southeast Asia, maritime Asia, and the Sinic World. He authored many books and articles that include The formation and transformation of the medieval state of Dai Viet (in Japanese, Osaka University Press, 2011) and “A Spatial Analysis of Thăng Long Capital During the Lý Period Through Re-Exploitation of Written Sources” (TRaNS: Trans -Regional and -National Studies of Southeast Asia vol. 2, 2014).  

Professor John Y. Ahn is a Associate Professor of Buddhist and Korean Studies at the University of Michigan and the author of Buddhas and Ancestors: Religion and Wealth in Fourteenth-Century Korea (University of Washington Press, 2018),Transgression in Korea: Beyond Resistance and Control (University of Michigan Press, 2018), andGongan Collections I, Collected Works of Korean Buddhism, Vol. 7-1 (Jogye Order of Korean Buddhism, 2012). His current research focuses on the economic history of Korea during the Koryŏ period (918-1392), reading practices in Song-dynasty (960-1279) Chan Buddhism, and the cultural history of weather and wealth during the Chosŏn period (1392-1910) in Korea.   This series is sponsored by Academy of Korean Studies (Project: AKS-2020-C-15), James P.
