Mobile cloud service
The broad goal of this research area is to develop the networking and systems technology that enables high-performance online services on smartphone devices. The technical approach we take is through -- mobile cloud service, -- which adapts the current Internet cloud computing platform to mobile devices. To realize this vision, there are three critical component technologies we plan to investigate: data center-based server cloud operating in the back end that offers streamlined management and online services, wireless and mobile access to the cloud on the Internet from smartphones, and new services enabled by the mobile cloud. The potential benefits of this research direction include offloading certain storage and computation from smartphones to the backend server cloud, efficient data sharing among socially connected smartphone users, reduced management and control hassels for the end users, and improved energy usage of the mobile device.
Network architecture for scalable secure communication
This research area focuses on network architecture and protocol designs to enable robust and secure communications in global scale. The Internet has become the most critical infrastructure of the society and new protocols are need to address the ever increasing security challenges facing the Internet today. The Internet is also becoming mobilized in coming years as billions of smartphones are getting online. In addition to cloud computing, we also need to develop novel global mobility management protocols to realize the vision of being connected "any time, any where, through any device".
Power and energy have become bottleneck in modern computing. The general research direction of this project include compilation and system optimization for parallel and heterogeneous systems, including multi-core CPUs, GPUs, and FPGAs, with the goal of achieving an order of magnitude of energy reduction. We plan to apply such heterogeneous computing techniques to a number of application fields, such as internet search, image processing, digital entertainment, and computer-aided designs. The student should have good background and interest in compiler, OS, and algorithm designs in general.
This project focuses on development and application of wireless network-enabled technology solutions combining personal communication devices, wireless wearable sensors, and other technologies integrated with medical enterprise computing. This program leverages clinical, academic, and industry partnerships to rapidly translate innovative wireless applications into validated health solutions. Partnerships with industry have been created in efforts to bridge the well-recognized gap between available wireless information technologies and their translation into successful, widely adopted products and services. Wireless Health applications range from those in health and wellness to rehabilitative care. Prefer students with computer engineering background with focus on hardware and embedded software.
